What I remember the most was I wanted to do what I wanted to do. And in the impatience of youth, I wanted to do what I knew would help me in advancing my career as a medical illustrator. Layering was not something I gave much thought to, except in watercolor washes for anatomical or botanical illustrations.
Friday, I asked another artist (Barbara Hipwell whose work is exhibited at The Conn-Artist Gallery & Studio in Hendersonville, NC) if she would guide me through something new so she taught me layering with raw sienna washes. It was fascinating to paint my subject and then go over what could have been a finished painting with a wash and paint some more. Yesterday and today's paintings each have several layers. I'm not sure if I will layer as much tomorrow, yet I am not sure I can ever paint again with out layering. It creates a glow and sense of depth I have not been able to achieve yet with acrylics (my work tends to be flat and colorful) and I am fascinated with the results.
Egg Day Four was done using Golden Opens Van Dyke Brown Hue; Raw Sienna; Anthraquinone Blue and Titanium White. And a hair dryer so I could speed up the process a bit. I love Golden Opens but they do take longer to dry and when doing a wash I was a wee bit impatient.
Thank you so much Barb - I will pick your brain again next Friday too!
